Eliminating Contenders To Find A Winner For The 2019 NCAA March Madness Tournament

The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament is upon us once again and as always I will be breaking down 5 ways you can eliminate some top seeds from consideration. In picking potential final 4 teams and champions I find it much easier to eliminate teams from consideration to narrow down the selections. The criteria we will use to do this are as follows

1. Pre Season AP Rankings can predict tournament success
The following comes from a Nate Silver article in the NY Times before the 2011 tournament.
Since the tournament field expanded to 64 teams in 1985, there have been 41 cases in which a school that was unranked to start the season entered the tournament ranked in the A.P. top 10 (excluding a couple of cases where the team was ineligible for tournament play). These schools, as you might expect, were seeded highly: eight were No. 1 seeds and another 17 were seeded No. 2. Absolutely none of these teams have made the Final Four, however: they are 0-for-41. Instead, they have been the victims of some notorious upsets, like the No. 2-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks losing — by 13 points! — to the No. 15 seed Coppin State in the opening round of the 1997 tournament, and the No. 3 seed Wisconsin Badgers being one of Davidson’s victims in 2008. Three of the No. 1 seeds that fit this description — Michigan in 1985, St. John’s in 1986, and Cincinnati in 2002 — lost in the Round of 32.
Since this article, I have kept track of all qualifying teams.

Iowa (5) lost in 3rd round to Louisville 2016. Xavier (2) lost in 2nd round to Wisconsin 2016. Oregon (1) lost in Elite 8 to Oklahoma 2016. West Virginia (3) lost in 1st round to Stephen F. Austin 2016. Miami (3) lost in 3rd round to Villanova 2017. Baylor (3) lost in the 3rd round to South Carolina 2018. Virginia (1) lost to 16th seed UMBC in its first game 2018. Michigan (3) lost in the championship game
The record is now 1-55 for these teams to reach the Final 4. Last season Michigan became the first team to buck this trend. They did so by miraculously getting out of the rd of 32 game against Houston. Houston had a chance to go up 4 with a few seconds left but missed 2 FT's and Michigan answered with a 30 ft 3 point shot at the buzzer to win by 1. A painful game for me as I had Houston in a rather large Calcutta style pool.

2. 3 Point Shooting
The 3 pt shot has become extremely important in both the NBA and college basketball.
Since 2007 no team who shoots under 30% from behind the arc has won a game in the tournament.
No teams qualify this season
Since 2007 only 5 teams shooting under 33% from 3 have made the elite 8. If you are not going to shoot the 3 well then you need to defend it well. In 2012 both Louisville and Ohio State made it to the final 4 with sub 33% 3 point shooting but both defended the 3 as good or better than they shot it. Louisville gave up 30.3% from 3 and Ohio State 32.5%. 2015 Kentucky was sub 33% but they defended it well at 32.5%. 2016 North Carolina broke this trend a bit with a poor 3pt shooting team that gave up 36% from 3.
Teams to be leery of 1E Duke - 30.2% 8E VCU - 30.7% 13E St. Louis - 30.8% 16E UNC Central - 31.1% 16W Prarie View - 31.5% 10E Minnesota - 32.1% 3E LSU - 32.3%
What is interesting here is how many teams in the East bracket are on this list including the number 1 overall seed Duke. When we look further into the numbers Duke is the 9th best team in the country at defending the 3 at 29.3%. Potential 2nd rd matchup VCU also defends the 3 really well. They give up 27.6% from behind the arc which is 3rd best in the country.

Points Per Game

Playing defense is great but you will need to keep pace with great offenses come tournament time.
80 Teams have scored 73 PPG or less coming into the tournament and had a 1-4 seed. 11 made the final 4 with no champions.
Three seasons ago there was a change in the rules. The shot clock went from 35 to 30 seconds. This has caused more possessions and as such higher scoring. The average ppg per team since 2010 are as follows
2010-11 : 68.28 2011-12 : 67.25 2012-13 : 66.72 2013-14 : 70.10 2014-15 : 66.76 2015-16 : 72.29 2016-17 : 72.57 2017-18 : 72.98 2018-19 : 71.77
Scoring has increased by about 6.6%. If we add 6.6% of 73 to 73 we get an average ppg of 77.8. This is now the number needed to be exceeded in order to be a contender. To be conservative we will round down to 77.5 PPG. In 2015-16 Villanova was at 77.2 ppg entering the tournament and won it all. We want to be careful if teams are really close as this stat has obviously changed over time.

4. Coaches Success Coaches are very important to the success of a team come tournament time. The great coaches tend to outperform their expectations.
This is taken from Pete at Bracket Science
Using tourney appearances and Elite Eight trips, I’ve come up with the following taxonomy of coaching types in the tourney:
Rookies – making their first trip to the tourney Novices – 2-5 tourney trips with no Elite Eight runs Prodigies – 2-5 tourney trips with at least one Elite Eight run Snake-bit – more than five trips with no Elite Eight runs Flashes – more than five trips with one Elite Eight run Destined – 6-10 trips with more than one Elite Eight run Veterans – more than 10 trips with 2-4 Elite Eight runs Legends – more than 10 trips with more than four Elite Eight runs
I’m focusing this analysis on one through six seeds, the seeds most likely to advance in the dance. A standard PASE analysis on the eight classes of coaches turned up these results:

As the chart shows the “snakebit” coaches are ones you will want to stay away from picking to make a deep run. Last season Cincinnati and Purdue fit this category and fell short of their seed expectations as 2 seeds.
This year’s teams with Snake Bit coaches with a 1-6 seed are:

Scoring Margin

Using the PASE (Performance above seed expectations) stat from the now-defunct Bracket Science the number one determinant of being able to outperform your seed expectation is scoring margin.
129 teams have been a 1-4 seed and come into the tournament with a 15+ scoring margin. 51 have made the final 4 (39.5%) and 18 have won it all (14%) including Villanova last season (Virginia was at 14.2 and lost in their first game)

Of the 157 teams to get a 1-4 seed and have a scoring margin under 10 just 2 have won a title and 11 have gone to the final 4.

Summary
31 Champions since 1985 have been a 1-4 seed with just 3 seeded higher. So for a potential champion, we should eliminate all teams seeded above 4.
From the above, we can eliminate the following top 4 seeds from championship contention;

If we go by these numbers we have eliminated 12 of the top 16 teams as potential champions. I did mention in the 3 point section that while Duke does qualify as a potential upset victim because of poor 3 pt shooting they do hold opponents to a 3 pt% lower than what they shoot. We have seen in the past that this formula can work and since Duke is the favorite to win it all they could very well win it all. However, if you are participating in a bracket pool with a large number of entrants you may want to look to a team other than Duke.
The teams we have left are 1W Gonzaga 1MW UNC 2E Michigan St 2S Tennessee
Let's have a look at where the country is picking on ESPN
Almost 40% of brackets have Duke as a champion. If you have 100 entrants in your pool and you pick Duke to win it all you are going to be -EV on that bracket. The reason is Duke has about a 19% chance to win the championship according to 538. The Vegas odds show about a 29% chance of Duke winning it all. That number is juiced a bit as well. Regardless of what you look at, there is no way Duke wins this tournament 4 out of 10 times as the public is picking. Because of this, you want to be short Duke and find value elsewhere. Of course, Duke may win and you will lose all of your brackets but even if you pick Duke and they win the odds are good that you will not win your bracket anyway. If you insist on picking Duke (perhaps you are an alum) then you need to differentiate yourself elsewhere in the pool. Pick some early upsets and perhaps look for a long shot or 2 to make the final 4 and championship game.
With 1 team from each bracket remaining, I will probably be putting in a bracket with a final 4 that looks exactly like the above (I play a few different brackets to be diverse and increase my chances of winning). It is a bit chalky but without Duke, it will be different than most brackets in most pools.
In this bracket, I will eliminate Gonzaga based on the 83rd best Strength of schedule. They typically have a weak SOS coming out of a mid-major conference and this season is no different.
The way my bracket pool works is you get the seed multiplied by the rounds value. So a 1 seed gets half the points a 2 seed gets for each win. With that said I will go with Michigan St. and Tennessee in the final game with Michigan St winning it all. I think this gives me enough differential from other Michigan St winners. In a 100 person pool, I expect there to be 5-8 Michigan St champions picked. ESPN has it at 4.7% but knowing my pool there will be a few more than that. The percentage is still low enough that if they do win it all my chances of cashing are high (top 5 cash). I will be adding a few more brackets with some other champions. I am going to do more analysis in a future article on possible Cinderella picks. That will help you if you take mostly favorites in the final 4.

Tournament Time; Big Ten predictions, sleepers, extra rest

March is rapidly approaching and we are transitioning into the most wonderful time of the year, for college basketball fans at least. That's right, we are officially entering conference tournament season. This is the time of the month where we see the feel good mid-major schools punch their tickets into the NCAA Tournament. Rest assured, there will probably be some buzzer beaters along the way.
This is just a warmup for what is to come following conference tournament season. Brackets, squares, survivor pools, office pools, it doesn't matter who you are, you're more than likely going to be investing some type of money, or at the very least your time, into 64 sets of young men, most aged somewhere between 18 and 22. Alright, investing may not be the proper term. Regardless, it doesn't matter if you're Kathy from accounting or Drew the professional sports better in Vegas, EVERYONE can rally around March Madness and the spectacle that it has become. Fox Business came out with a report last year that businesses are set to lose between 4 and 6 BILLION dollars in lost wages due to employees filling out and checking on brackets, and even streaming games during work. Guess you just have to chalk that up as a cost of doing business.
Alright, let's preview what lies ahead in the 2018 Big Ten Tournament.
The Favorites
Michigan State The Big Ten regular season champions and (1.a) of the odds on favorite to win this conference tournament. Michigan State has been the class of the Big Ten for most of this college basketball season. They enter the Big Ten Tournament on a scorching hot 12 game winning streak, not having lost in about a month and a half. The Spartans don't have a heck of a lot to lose but they have a ton to gain by way of winning this tournament, which is a potential #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. However, even that doesn't necessarily guarantee them one of the 4 top spots, but it would be a heck of an accolade to add to their resume coming out of a strong Big Ten as regular season/tournament champions. Despite being listed as a recipient of impermissible benefits by way of a recent NCAA scandal, Miles Bridges has been cleared to play moving forward, and if his eligibility remains, there's no reason to think Michigan State can't win this thing.
Ohio State Somehow the Buckeyes continue to fly under the radar and continually don't get the respect they deserve. They've wrapped up conference play having beaten all the goliaths of the Big Ten. Ohio State has impressive wins over Michigan State, Michigan as well as Purdue, and I'm not sure anybody knows about it. However, with the good comes the bad. There's been one team in conference that Ohio State can't seem to get past, Penn State. The stars seem to be aligning for a possible 3rd matchup of the year between the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions in the quarterfinal round. Penn State will look to take advantage of the situation in which Ohio State doesn't have much to play for, having already clinched a spot in the NCAA tourney. However, I have a real hard time believing that OSU is going to roll over and let PSU beat them and walk away with a clean sweep on the season. It's hard to beat a team twice in college football and maybe even tougher to beat a team three times in college basketball. I think the Buckeyes will right the ship against Penn State, but that's as far as they'll go.
Purdue The Boilermakers are the (1.b) odds on favorite to win this conference tournament. Outside of a recent 3-game skid, they went undefeated in conference play. They have seemingly cleaned that up a bit as they're riding a 3 game win streak heading into this week. This team can do it all with their excellent shooting, defense and rebounding. They have stellar guard play as well as a true force down low in Isaac Haas. If Vincent Edwards is healthy, Purdue is a real threat to win it all. They received the luck of the draw in seeding and will likely sleep walk their way into the quarterfinals. They would be playing with chips on their shoulders in matchups against MSU or OSU wanting to avenge losses from earlier this season. Team health will play a big role in whether or not the Boilermakers cut down these nets. It wouldn't shock me if they played it somewhat safe heading into March Madness. I see them making a deep run, but inevitably falling just short.
The Sleepers
Michigan Alright, so maybe this isn't fair to be a sleeper pick. Out of all the teams without a double bye, Michigan has the best chance to win it. The Wolverines come into this tournament blazing hot. They're fresh off the heels of wins over Penn State and Ohio State. This appears to be deja vu all over again, with Michigan getting hot at the exact right time. Throughout the entire season, Michigan has been "eh", but they always seem to turn it around come March. Defense isn't their strength like it has been in recent years, but it's slowly getting better. If you're looking to take a flyer, look no further.
Penn State This team has been a thorn in the side for some of the top teams in the Big Ten this season. They come off to me as the little brother that just won't stop pestering you. They're two biggest wins have both been over Ohio State, but had competitive games against Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue. Lucky for the Nittany Lions, its lining up like they could be facing Ohio State in the second round, that's IF they can get past Northwestern. It wouldn't shock me if they lost in the first round, but it also wouldn't shock me if they got hot and won it all.
Wisconsin I should probably list the Badgers as a "Super Sleeper" because their odds to win this are.... slim. With that being said, if they can find their touch from behind the arc and Ethan Happ can play how he did against Purdue, they could turn some heads this week in the Big Apple. They've won 4 of 5 coming into it and their only loss was a close one against Michigan State. If I had to pick a team in the bottom 7, Wisconsin would be my pick.
Storylines to follow

Despite being the #4 seed, Nebraska is listed as one of the first 4 teams out of the NCAA tournament. They're going to need to make a splash to get a bid, but with a second round matchup against Michigan looming, that's going to be tough to do.
The only four teams that are guaranteed to get an invite to the NCAA Tourney are Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue and Michigan. The others have work left.
The Big Ten Tournament has been moved up an entire week early this year by shortening their regular season. By doing so, Madison Square Garden now plays host and the Big Ten has a stage by themselves. The big question is, how will this affect the teams going into the NCAA tournament? Will the added rest be a benefit, or will teams get off to a slow start off of long rest. One thing it might do is give teams an extra incentive to go all out, knowing they'll have some time off after.

How the Big Ten Tournament plays out
Michigan over Purdue. The Wolverines are red hot and I like them to repeat as Big Ten tournament champions. You can also snag them at +450 or even as high as +700 to do so, if you're into that kind of thing.

Some Friendly Last Minute Bracket Advice

This is really only for one group of people. Those who know very little about college basketball who only watch games in March and who are also only interested in being in the running for winning their pool. If you just want to have fun or look like the smartest person in the pool, do not read any further. Finally, nothing is set in stone and anything can happen in a one-and-done tournament. That is the rule to follow no matter what.
Don't overthink the early rounds.
The first-round games are worth one point. Unless you have a team going to the Sweet 16, go ahead and pick a few upsets without fear. BUT, here is the caveat, you don't want to pick, say, Duke losing in the second round, no matter that it's happened a few times recently. Your main goal to win your pool is not lose it this first weekend. That means, you need to make sure as many of your Elite Eight and, hopefully, all your Final Four teams survive the first weekend.
If, say, Duke loses in round 2, MOST people's brackets will suffer along with you. A few folks will gain something, but you just can't account for that. This is all about giving yourself the best chance to win. And pick Duke to at least the Elite Eight is "Vegas" bet.
Don't carry your upsets too far
Everyone wants to be the one who picked VCU to make the Final Four. Don't be that person. By the time the craziness of that first weekend ends, teams head home for a few days, gather themselves, etc., the top seeds/better teams in the Sweet 16 tend to win. And, by the Elite Eight, it's usually one of the teams seeded 1-6, that make it. The lowest seed to ever make the Elite Eight is a 12, and it happened once. On average, three of the four No. 1 seeds make it to the Elite Eight each year. This is also when the points really start ramping up.
1, 2, 3, 4 — it's that simple
Check this out. Stay with the top seeds and don't go too crazy avoiding the top 2 seeds in each region. That being said, the four No. 1s have only done it once. But, since the field went to 64, 18 of the 30 champions have been 1 seeds.
Pick Kentucky to win
I am sure people will harp on this a little. But I am convinced, considering UK is such a huge favorite, you should not pick someone else in order to capitalize on them being upset. Some years, I would agree. But there has never been a bigger favorite. And, for me, you are better off riding UK than be kicking yourself for NOT picking them when you had a chance to finish in the money if you had. There is way too many variables in this tournament. But Kentucky winning is, by the odds, probably the safest way to not be regretting your champion. Also, like with my upset analogy, the vast majority of people will pick UK. So, chances are, the team you are competing against for the money, also picked UK. It's just playing the odds.

It's a very strange time.

I'm old enough to remember the Watergate hearings on TV. I grew up in NH and was acutely aware of politics growing up. I remember rationed gas with even and odd plates. I remember 18% mortgage rates. My father held elected office. I hold a minor elected office. I've been active in politics for 30+ years.
I've never been more worried about the US than I am now.
I was not a fan of Bill Clinton, but I knew in my gut that if things really went south, there were adults that could step in, offer suggestions, quietly give advice to keep Clinton, the world and the US in balance.
I did support Bush, though there were some rough moments fiscally that I wanted to wring his neck. But again, I never felt like the US was out there. Even after 9-11, I felt like we were OK. We got slapped upside the head a couple of times, but we'd be OK. Again, there were folks that had political insight, people the President could go to for sound advice, that had cooler heads and understood various parts of the world.
With Obama, I feel like the middle school intramural basketball team is running the country.There are no adults in this White House. There are no adults in the wings that can step up and quietly interject some common sense. Obama has partitioned himself away from everything except fundraising and anything that will keep him in office. Rather than accepting responsibility, he talks out of both sides of his mouth.
In this week's address he said "... those who attack our people will find no escape from justice. We will not waver in their pursuit." But his Ambassador Rice continues to insist that the attack in Libya was a spur of the moment thing rather than a planned 9-11 anniversary attack that the Libyan President and other Libyan officials assert. And what did Obama say initially? Nothing, other than Egypt was apparently no longer an ally while on his way to Vegas for yet another fundraiser.
Israel is gearing up to bomb the living shit out of Iran. I figure this will happen before the elections. But Obama can't fit Bibi into his schedule because of scheduling issues. Obama's a busy man. Between his appearance on Letterman and his fundraiser with Jay Z and Beyonce, you can understand why a Bibi meeting just won't work.
Ignoring the current issues, can we forget the Federal crack downs on medical marijuana, that he reauthorized and expanded the Patriot Act, he ignored illegal immigration in southern border states, transparency was his campaign buzzword, but this administration holds meetings off-site so no one will know with whom they're meeting. "The one-term proposition" has become a mad scramble to stay in office, and the 14.7% U6 number be damned. Obamacare with no leadership from the White House. Not a single DOJ prosecution for the Wall Street mess, but coincidentally, Wall Street was Obama's largest 2008 contributor. The list goes on and on.
I want an adult leading the country, not a one-term state senator who after almost four years as the President, hasn't shown an iota of leadership other than when picking his NCAA brackets.
