July 4th weekend Public Service Announcement [COVID-19 Guidelines & Information]
Hello folks of venturacounty! Since Governor Newsom will not be making a press conference today (it's apparently an observed holiday), I have decided to instead compile a list of guidelines and helpful information to help keep you and your loved ones safe & happy celebrating this July 4th weekend. Information has been compiled from the Governor himself via Twitter, FB, or covid19.ca.gov as well as various reliable news outlets. Feel free to openly start discussions on specific county laws and ordinances. I have tried to include some pertinent ones for Santa Barbara, Ventura, Orange County, & LA. I will be periodically updating this post as more information gets released.
From Newsom's 07/02 press conference: Masks keep Californians healthy! Wear One! Renewed emphasis on the evidence pointing to decreased transmission rates with masks. Masks are one of the most impactful COVID-19 prevention measures. Countries that have implemented masks or have had universal mask policies in place have seen significantly less spread of COVID-19. Similar trends in other US states who have adopted masks early. Californians should not gather with people you do not live with. Avoid crowds. We need to temper the curve again like we did months ago. This week is EXTREMELY important, the Governor stresses. He wishes us all a Happy 4th of July otherwise! "We are just trying to encourage people to be safe, thoughtful of self and others. Just because someone else is doing it, doesn't mean you should..." He encourages people to do the right thing. Look at the hard numbers. The facts.

Today's COVID-19 Statistics California now has 248,235 confirmed cases of COVID-19, resulting in 6,263 deaths. The number of COVID-related deaths increased by 1.6 percent from Wednesday’s total of 6,163. The number of COVID-19 diagnostic test results in California reached a total of 4,448,176 an increase of 109,458 tests since Wednesday. The rate of positive tests over the last 14 days is 6.4 percent. California’s hospitalizations due to COVID-19 increased by 151 from Wednesday. 82,819 new cases in last 14 days. 1,292,474 tests conducted in last 14 days. 6.4% positivity rate.
What's open? [editor's note: The 20 counties on the watchlist may experience variance. Look under "What is open with county variance?" or refer to your local county website]
Essential services that protect public health, public safety, and provide essential needs will remain open, such as: Gas stations Pharmacies Food: Grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants, restaurants with outdoor dining Banks Laundromats/laundry services Childcare Essential state and local government functions will also remain open, including law enforcement and offices that provide government programs and services.
Retailers can open statewide. All will require modifications to support social distancing. This includes: Shopping malls Libraries Movie theaters and drive-in theaters (with modifications) Bookstores Jewelry stores Toy stores Clothing and shoe stores Home and furnishing stores Sporting goods stores Florists Offices (in all sectors, not only critical infrastructure)
Limited services which do not generally require close customer contact, such as: Pet grooming Dog walking Car washes Appliance repair Residential and janitorial cleaning Places of worship [New guidelines released 07/01] Plumbing Outdoor museums
Music, film, and TV production Professional sports (without live audiences) Schools and day camps What's closed?
Statewide, the following are still closed: Personal services, like nail salons, body waxing and tattoo parlors Public events and gatherings, like live audience sports Convention centers Theme parks and festivals Higher education (in person), except where supporting essential workforce activities, including but not limited to providing housing solutions, COVID-19 response, and training and instruction for the essential workforce. Indoor playgrounds, like bounce centers, ball pits and laser tag Saunas and steam rooms Recreational team sports What is open with county variance?

The risk of COVID-19 infection is still real for all Californians and continues to be fatal. That is why every business permitted to open should take every step humanly possible to reduce the risk of infection by following these state guidelines. Can I still leave the house even if I am not a essential critical infrastructure worker?
Yes. As described in more detail elsewhere in applicable state public health directives (including on this page), there are a wide range of circumstances in which you may leave your home or other place of residence, even if you are not an Essential Critical Infrastructure Worker. For example, you may leave your home to work at any business or other entity that is allowed to open, to engage in in-person worship and protest activities consistent with public health directives, to patronize local businesses, or to care for friends or family members who require assistance (as set forth under Health care). And errands like these are not the only reasons you may leave your home: you may also leave your home with or without a specific destination in mind (for example, to walk your dog, to engage in physical recreation, or simply to get some fresh air) as long as you maintain physical distancing and comply with any other applicable public health directives. Are gatherings permitted?
State public health directives prohibit professional, social and community gatherings. Gatherings are defined as meetings or other events that bring together persons from multiple households at the same time for a shared or group experience in a single room, space, or place such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall, or other indoor or outdoor space. They pose an especially high danger of transmission and spread of COVID-19. On May 25, 2020, in an effort to balance First Amendment interests with public health, the State Public Health Officer created an exception to the prohibition against mass gatherings for faith-based services and cultural ceremonies as well as protests. Those types of gatherings are now permitted indoors so long as they do not exceed 100 attendees or 25% of the capacity of the space in which the gathering is held, whichever is lower. State public health directives now do not prohibit in-person outdoor faith-based services or protests as long as face coverings are worn and physical distancing of 6 feet between persons or groups of persons from different households is maintained at all times. All other gatherings are prohibited until further notice, except as otherwise specifically permitted in state public health directives (including in applicable industry guidance). Crowds and limited physical distancing increase the risk for COVID-19. If you attended a protest, remember that confidential, free testing is available. Find a testing location near you. If you test negative it does not mean that you may not develop COVID-19 later on. Therefore, it is advisable that you self-isolate for 14 days if possible. Which beaches are closed?
[Updated 07/03 13:30 pm]: Beaches in the counties of Orange, LA, Ventura, & Santa Barbara have been closed. All associated local/state beach parking has also been closed. Santa Barbara residents may be fined $1,000 or experience jail time for gross disregard of health orders. Can I set off fireworks this weekend?
Please refer to your local county website & guidelines. When setting off fireworks, please consider doing so in safe & considerate manner. CA is entering brush fire season; additionally, we house many veterans who are sensitive to large, explosive noises. county-specific note: VC may impose fines of up to $1,000 for illegal fireworks. Closest Mario Kart 8 Game (and Switch) to Mountain West Schools
It has been said that the Mountain West conference is “At the Peak,” and to me, nothing illustrates that more, than the fact that there are 12 teams competing in the only NCAA Division 1 conference that sponsors e-sports. Of course, since the matches are played head-to-head, Boise State has an advantage because they tint the monitors blue, and play with all blue avatars; an advantage that is confirmed in their winning of League of Legends and Overwatch, but with the Spring season being cut, next year the Mountain West has announced that they will be playing Mario Kart 8, for the Nintendo Switch. Due to the large amounts of people in the Mountain West cities suddenly having $1200 burning a hole in their pocket, every store that sells Nintendo Switch has sold out of their allotment; yes, even, Amazon. So, thus the conundrum becomes: How can these players, prospects, and ordinary people practice in order to “git gud” as the gamers would say? Well, that’s where I come in. For, you see, since I am allowed out on the streets again, finally, due to both my prison sentence being cut short, and my work being determined to be “essential,” I had the time to scope out some places. Alas, while my cough and fever are not improving as much as I had hoped since I last got back from Italy, I did manage to find some time to visit all of the Mountain West cities in order to find the easiest place to get a Switch and Mario Kart 8 location. For simplicity’s sake, I am going by the football stadium since it’s a well-defined point in most locations – San José State fans, the football stadium is that big ovoid building at the corner of E Alma Ave, and S 7th St… It’s the place where the people aren’t on Saturday’s is September. Should you get hungry during your travels, I have also managed to find a some breakfast locations in the same vicinity
Okay, so I lied a little; I tried to get into the university, but, unfortunately the men with guns wouldn’t actually let me get beyond the gate on S Gate Rd, and I was still a little jet-lagged having just gotten in from Frankfurt after having woken up for my 0610 flight for the Linate to Frankfurt leg (stupid weather prevented the flight from Denver to ABQ, but my loss is your gain). So, while this may not be the closest, it certainly will fit the bill. Tyler-Jay Rowland who lives at 3075 Navigation Drive, in Colorado Springs was more than willing to help out, especially since his son, Jeremiah, was grounded for a month for staying out after curfew two weekends in a row. As the falcon flies, this location is 5.2 miles away; in a car, it’s not too much further than that.
Boise State
Now, I don’t, technically, hate the way that Boise is laid out with the river running right through the center of town, but even though Maci Drew lives in the Clearwater Apartments, unit 323, which is in a straight line, only a quarter of a mile from the stadium, you will have to go the Exxtramile, to get to her apartment. Also, she would like me to point out, that times for a waitress like herself are a little rough, so please, if you’re hungry, skip Taco Bell, and eat at the Bar Gernika in downtown Boise, right next to the Central Plaza and Century Link Arena. “We have wifi” she said.
Colorado State
This is, by far, the most remarkable location; I had completely forgotten that they moved to an on-campus stadium, so I initially went to the Hughes Stadium location, and found a big pile of dirt. And not much else – well, if you exclude the trees that formed a nice line, that brought me back to my college days. Having corrected my too old Garmin in-car GPS, I found Tim Thatcher on 604 Balsam Ln; he’s a little deaf, so you might need to knock like you are ram-ing down the door. He bought the Switch after his wife of 35 years died to help him grieve and spend his retirement, “but it’s just making me too sad lately, and I’ve never been very good at vid’ya [sic] games. I still don’t know how I’m supposed to save the princess when she’s trying to beat me… That reminds me of my princess, who I lost last year. She was so kind, we met in high school, I had an onion on my belt as was the style in those days. They didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.” I’ll be honest, at this point I started zoning out because, again, fever. He honestly looked really sad as I was talking to him, so you might want to try to cheer him up, since he’s just a lonely guy bein’ a dude. In a straight line distance, you’re only going .3 miles, and it’s not too much further by car.
New Mexico
This is by far the closest location to the stadium. The UNM Lobo Club is a non-essential business in the state of New Mexico, and UNM and the Athletics Department realized that funding would need to be cut dramatically throughout the state, and with the sweetheart deal they got from the legislature this year, they decided to close all athletic facilities, including the Maloof building, home of both Eddie Nuñez’s office, and the Lobo Club. I suggest using the side door closest to the field level entrance of the stadium. That’ll take you to the weight room; an alarm will go off, the code is “1892” the year the football team first played (interesting tidbit: the marching band was founded in 1889, the same year as the university); from there enter the main hallway, and go to the first door on the left after you pass the restrooms. The last time I was there, they had a vending machine that dispensed free Mountain Dew; I was howl-ing with laughter after I found that. Also, if you see Señor Manta, say “Hola!” he’s been down on his luck since his family were killed in the accident, and now he wanders the street like a lone Lobo.
Utah State
It was like a bomb went off. No one was around; maybe they were busy playing Farmer, or having a bonfire out in the dirt behind the stadium, wit their brown-eyed girls, but Jeff Field’s dorm room, Aggie Village Community building 17, first floor, third window from the right (he leaves it unlocked, so don’t worry about access) has a Switch just sitting there on the bed, as though he borrowed it from someone, but never managed to return it before he left. Go on, take it, just say that it was yours and he left it, no one will check.
Wyoming
Cowboys and Cowgirls are just different, I guess; I could not find a Nintendo Switch in town for the life of me. I found many Switchblades, Light switches, and many wooden rods, so I took my horse down to Cheyenne, and found a recently laid-off Subway Sandwich Artist called Dom, who knew just where to look. He directed me to 803 West 21st St, Suite B. He told me, “yeah, the guy who runs this storefront, has a little son, about 6 years old. He keeps a Switch in his desk’s keyboard tray for when he picks his son up from school.” Because of the ordeal in Laramie, I asked him to clarify, and he did, “yeah… Nintendo switch.” He said as he looked around shiftily. If that doesn’t work you can always try Suite C, I heard they stock Switches… oh wait, not that kind.” I was going to ask him for more information, but he entered what looked like an abandoned brick building just passed the railroad tracks, “You didn’t see me,” he said. And I also didn’t hear the gunshots that went off as I walked back to my car.

Hawai’i is interesting because the Honolulu airport has a much better open air location than the El Paso airport; there’s a water path, it’s weird man, it reminds me a lot of the Tiki Room at Disn… oh, yeah, Hawai’i, Polynesia, that makes sense. Anyway, the stadium is home to the largest swap meet’s I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, I did not find any Switches, but I did find a guy swapping Macadamia Nut cookies for a few dollars, so naturally, I bought some. It started to rain, so even though many people are Rainbow Warriors or Wahine, as the women prefer to be called, I am not. I stopped in at the ‘Aeia Public Library for a spell, and my phone was dead, so I needed a place to charge for a bit. The nice librarian, Akela (“it means graceful,” I was told. After I asked, “like the wolf-spirit in Hindi myths?”), pointed out, that, “We loan out all sorts of stuff here; pots, pans, sewing machines. Believe it or not, we even rent out video game systems. Our most popular is probably the Nintendo Switch, but we also have a couple of Xbox’s and PS4’s.” I guess I looked very shocked because Akela continued, “with the military surrounding us, we, the library system, get a lot of goods from contractors who don’t want to have a lot of their goods shipped back to the mainland.” Seeing how much it cost to ship out, I completely understood, and bid ¬¬Akela aloha, and failed the Hawai’I test by passing out at the nearest Embassy Suites, in Kapolei, if I remember correctly (I probably don’t, I was tired).
Fresno State
A nice cow brought me to Clovis. Much like what happened in Las Vegas, it was not the cool one, but instead the one in California. She (I saw udders), brought me specifically to 264 Clovis Ave, and said, “what you seek, from my master, is in there.” I’m not sure if it was my fever, jet-lag, a combination of them, or something else entirely, but then the cow vanished as though she was just a thing on the internet. A stray puppy passed by me in downtown, so that was probably the highlight of the trip.
Nevada (Reno)
Look, I’ll be honest, Reno to me always makes me feel like I’m going to be leaving the city without one or both of my kidneys. I don’t know why I expect Renoirs to chew my body like a Pack of Wolves, but there you are. Diedre Thomas of 128 Keystone Ave, fell on hard times. She poured herself a glass of vodka, neat, and said, “you can have anything you want,” she paused briefly to wink at me, “for the right price.” I specifically enquired about the Switch, “Anything,” she replied. She pulled out what appeared to be a small glass bowl that looked like an incense holder, and a baggie of chalk dust, and… Oh my god, she was going to smoke cocaine. Anyway, as she pulled out the pulled out the baggie, I hastily took my leave. I then went to the airport and went to my next stop….
Nevada – Las Vegas
Can you believe parents still bring their children, like elementary school aged children to Las Vegas. And it’s not the cool Las Vegas, in New Mexico, it’s the one in Nevada; well, I guess, technically they bring their kids to Paradise, and not Las Vegas, but c’mon man, there isn’t that much difference. Anyway, head to the Excalibur hotels because Carla, the housekeeper said that on average 3 Switches get left by guests every day. I then felt really depressed while walking around the hotel, so I left to check out the Mirage, where I normally stay on these Mountain West trips. I also learned that if there’s one thing that freaks me out more than the throngs of people walking the Strip, it’s when there’s nobody around. Once the new stadium gets completed it will be vastly easier to get to the casino than at the current location.
San Diego State
I stayed with Dominic, at his house of Friars Road. I was starting to feel sick to my stomach with the lack of green chile, so it was so enjoyable to spend time with a fellow New Mexican (and my roommate junior year). He took me on a little tour: Balboa Park’s stadium (home of the former Harbor Bowl, and the first tie in UNM Football history), the USS Midway, and Ocean Beach. I had forgotten about the assignment until I looked down at my feet and found a working Switch. When it was still there after an hour, I borrowed a small boat, realised, I need a bigger boat and headed out to the Ocean. Having claimed rights, I then put it back, so you might also find it.

Look, there are a lot of people who depart from the San Jose Airport. The kids who travel on these flights are slightly scatter-brained because of the adrenaline of taking a plane ride (and passing through the checkpoint), and leave some of their electronics, and I found a shoe! A shoe! Who only puts one shoe on and then walks-off? It was an adult shoe, so it’s not like a child/toddleparent left it, no, someone made a conscious decision to leave their shoe… Maybe it was a protest? Anyway, just tell the guy that you left your Switch at the checkpoint, if he asks you what color it was say, it had yellow grips that slide off, but the screen was bounded by black.

From Newsom's 07/02 press conference: Masks keep Californians healthy! Wear One! Renewed emphasis on the evidence pointing to decreased transmission rates with masks. Masks are one of the most impactful COVID-19 prevention measures. Countries that have implemented masks or have had universal mask policies in place have seen significantly less spread of COVID-19. Similar trends in other US states who have adopted masks early. Californians should not gather with people you do not live with. Avoid crowds. We need to temper the curve again like we did months ago. This week is EXTREMELY important, the Governor stresses. He wishes us all a Happy 4th of July otherwise! "We are just trying to encourage people to be safe, thoughtful of self and others. Just because someone else is doing it, doesn't mean you should..." He encourages people to do the right thing. The number of COVID-19 diagnostic test results in California reached a total of 4,448,176 an increase of 109,458 tests since Wednesday. The rate of positive tests over the last 14 days is 6.4 percent. California’s hospitalizations due to COVID-19 increased by 151 from Wednesday. 82,819 new cases in last 14 days. 1,292,474 tests conducted in last 14 days. 6.4% positivity rate.

As described in more detail elsewhere in applicable state public health directives (including on this page), there are a wide range of circumstances in which you may leave your home or other place of residence, even if you are not an Essential Critical Infrastructure Worker. For example, you may leave your home to work at any business or other entity that is allowed to open, to engage in in-person worship and protest activities consistent with public health directives, to patronize local businesses, or to care for friends or family members who require assistance (as set forth under Health care). And errands like these are not the only reasons you may leave your home: you may also leave your home with or without a specific destination in mind (for example, to walk your dog, to engage in physical recreation, or simply to get some fresh air) as long as you maintain physical distancing and comply with any other applicable public health directives. Are gatherings permitted?
State public health directives prohibit professional, social and community gatherings. Gatherings are defined as meetings or other events that bring together persons from multiple households at the same time for a shared or group experience in a single room, space, or place such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall, or other indoor or outdoor space. They pose an especially high danger of transmission and spread of COVID-19. On May 25, 2020, in an effort to balance First Amendment interests with public health, the State Public Health Officer created an exception to the prohibition against mass gatherings for faith-based services and cultural ceremonies as well as protests. Those types of gatherings are now permitted indoors so long as they do not exceed 100 attendees or 25% of the capacity of the space in which the gathering is held, whichever is lower. State public health directives now do not prohibit in-person outdoor faith-based services or protests as long as face coverings are worn and physical distancing of 6 feet between persons or groups of persons from different households is maintained at all times. All other gatherings are prohibited until further notice, except as otherwise specifically permitted in state public health directives (including in applicable industry guidance). Crowds and limited physical distancing increase the risk for COVID-19. If you attended a protest, remember that confidential, free testing is available. Find a testing location near you. CA is entering brush fire season; additionally, we house many veterans who are sensitive to large, explosive noises. How can I report businesses that are violating COVID-19 industry guidelines?
Citizens are encouraged to file reports with their county website. Reports & complaints can also be filed at covid19.ca.gov/ or on specific, department websites (i.e.- OSHA). Many citizens have found that Twitter is an efficient platform is raising awareness to force government bodies and businesses to act. Please help in keeping your community safe! And errands like these are not the only reasons you may leave your home: you may also leave your home with or without a specific destination in mind (for example, to walk your dog, to engage in physical recreation, or simply to get some fresh air) as long as you maintain physical distancing and comply with any other applicable public health directives. Are gatherings permitted?
State public health directives prohibit professional, social and community gatherings. Gatherings are defined as meetings or other events that bring together persons from multiple households at the same time for a shared or group experience in a single room, space, or place such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall, or other indoor or outdoor space. They pose an especially high danger of transmission and spread of COVID-19. On May 25, 2020, in an effort to balance First Amendment interests with public health, the State Public Health Officer created an exception to the prohibition against mass gatherings for faith-based services and cultural ceremonies as well as protests. Those types of gatherings are now permitted indoors so long as they do not exceed 100 attendees or 25% of the capacity of the space in which the gathering is held, whichever is lower. State public health directives now do not prohibit in-person outdoor faith-based services or protests as long as face coverings are worn and physical distancing of 6 feet between persons or groups of persons from different households is maintained at all times. All other gatherings are prohibited until further notice, except as otherwise specifically permitted in state public health directives (including in applicable industry guidance). Crowds and limited physical distancing increase the risk for COVID-19. If you attended a protest, remember that confidential, free testing is available. Find a testing location near you. If you test negative it does not mean that you may not develop COVID-19 later on. Therefore, it is advisable that you self-isolate for 14 days if possible. Which beaches are closed?

Delta Green AAR: State of Jefferson #0 Preparation
TL:DR: PTBP inspired me to run a Delta Green game and put together a campaign setting. To help with note taking and motivation, I decided to put together some After-Action reports and post them here. -=-=-=-
Introduction
I run a weekly 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons game. Every Tuesday night for two years at this point for 6 PCs. Level 14, going on 15 in an adapted version of Paizo Publishing's Ironfang Invasion adventure path. We’ve probably got another six months of solid play, aiming for a finish at around level 18. Running this game for this long taught me a lot, even though it wasn’t my first long runner. But one thing it taught me above all else is: I don’t want to run Dungeons and Dragons or anything like it anytime soon. There's a whole tirade about why that is, but suffice to say a few months ago I started looking for a new system to replace 5e once my Tuesday night group was done with it. Plenty of good games stuck their heads up (Band of Blades/Blades in the Dark being my favourite) but none seemed to be a good fit for six people. Then I stumbled across PTBP and Delta Green. I had played some CoC years ago and Sci-Fi Horror has to be my favourite genre of all time, tack on the modern setting and I was hooked. I had spent many hours reading SCPs and even a few writing some, plus running a Hunter:The Vigil game years back and even playing a Hunter LARP in the same time period. Plus the PTBP boys have such an infectious enthusiasm. And then I actually ran a short 2-session story and realised that 6 PC Delta Green would be a nightmare. With the modern setting and the investigative style, players are constantly going off on tangents or separating the party. With 4 people and a tense feel, people stay interested, but with six (and more importantly, MY SIX), there is no way that it would be a cohesive session. So I said what every ForeverDM says; “This can become my campaign setting that I always say I’m working on!” So I started writing a campaign setting for a Delta Green game that may never come. Enabling me to fully flesh out an entire region complete with NPCs, plots, eldritch horrors and the works! I’d slowly find players, run each of them through individual ‘Spookening’ sessions to show their origins into the Opera. It’d be dope! Having just finished my Honours Thesis, I wanted to establish writing as something I liked, not something I did for the expensive paper. My Girlfriend was interested from the start and wanted desperately to play the game when it ran. I was talking about it a bit to different folks and when they asked ‘When is it running?’ or ‘Can I play?’ I would always say it wasn’t near ready, I mean, I hadn’t even mapped out all the airports in the region, how could I run a game there without knowing where the airports are? Eventually, I got cornered by four players (including my girlfriend) who wanted to be in the game, had a time, place and wanted to know if I would do it. This was the first lesson Delta Green taught me. “Your campaign setting is never finished and nothing will make you write your important stuff like a game in three hours.” So, I ran session 1 on a Sunday evening and haven’t looked back. This AAR will be an account of the setting, the story, and our agents as they travel a hopefully extreme and entertaining story. Hopefully, none of them end up on here since I’ll also try to include my Keeper perspective and process of putting together this setting. The Setting.
As a preface, I’m not an American. I’m an Australian who’s never been to the Western Hemisphere. So my apologies for butchering your country, your towns, and your overall culture. I've moved some history around and changed some events to make my timeline work. Hopefully it's not offensive. The basis and name of the setting is something I learned about from another podcast (shout out the BehindTheBastards and ItCouldHappenHere). The State of Jefferson is a secessionist movement in rural Northern California and Southern Oregon. Essentially a right-wing/rural response to the liberal cities of LA and Portland, these regions want to secede from California and Oregon, becoming the 51st American state. A Pacific NorthWest setting gives tonnes of great locales, from Redwood forests, mountain peaks, wild rivers and even some desert thrown in there. Couple this with problems with limited law enforcement, a multicultural history, and the stories write themselves. I started by putting a map together since that always helps me visualise what I’m working with, plus at this point, this was just a campaign setting, not an active game. I made this map by taking one of the proposed State of Jefferson maps that I liked, editing out the state names, then searching for the incorporated cities of each county, along with their county seats. I didn’t use many scales, as you can see, and it makes Weaverville look really important even though it has a population of around 3,600. I also placed the state capital in Redding, after looking at the discourse around SOJ, turns out some want it to be Yreka, CA, since that was first suggested back in the sixties. But I couldn’t see that happening now. So I ended up with this map: https://imgur.com/a/Bx5Mnv6 So now I needed to make the State of Jefferson a thing, how would that happen in 2020? I could see Trump doing it, in a crazy situation. Jefferson counties are pretty solidly Republican, for the same reasons they want to be their own state to begin with. So I imagined a 2020 electoral race where Trump engaged with these far-right groups like the militias and such, promising a look into a 51st state. But saying it and doing it are two separate things. So let's ratchet up the tension some more. Trump wins 2020, promising to look into the State of Jefferson. 2021 Trump has a massive stroke. Initially, it looks like he’s not going to pull through, the GOP starts planning for his replacement to step up. Current VP is an old-school Neocon named Andrew Cohen. But Trump does pull through and despite some major health concerns, seems convinced to stay in the White House. The old-school Neocons behind Andrew Cohen that used to be the soul of the GOP smelled power again and don’t want to give in, meanwhile the New-Right cultural conservatives backing Trump smell a coup. The GOP starts to implode. Trump, desperate to solidify his base, is firing out executive orders left, right and center. One of them is the creation of the State of Jefferson. A year later, it's 2022, Andrew Cohen is acting President and national politics is a shitshow. So many executive orders went out that it's impossible to pull them all back and it looks like Jefferson is going to stick. But our players are going to be Federal agents, what are they doing in this backwoods state? Well, I imagine a new state appearing largely out of nowhere would throw all the federal departments a curveball. Suddenly they need to work out if the FBI needs a headquarters in Redding, what about DoD? DoJ? So they send a big audit team to work out what federal government efforts would be needed in the new state. This would be called ‘The Office of Temporary Handover’ and would be the taskforce my players would be assigned to. What I wrote up is as follows:
Office of Temporary Handover
A fifty person strong taskforce, the OTH is made of representatives of a large variety of shifting government departments. Their job was originally twofold: -Maintain the essential functions of their organisations during the handover and establishment of the state. -Assess the State of Jefferson for their various organisations, in regards to offices, resources, and personnel. Officially the Federal Office of Temporary Handover was established on the 1st of April, 2022 at 2042 South Market St in Redding, which was to be the state capitol (not without a considerable fight from Chico, Eureka, and Yreka). Originally the OTH was headed up by Brennan Bartlet from the Department of Labour. Originally the DOL had intended the main aspects of the OTH to be assessing manpower requirements to then be passed onto the government departments to fulfill. However, quickly after arriving on the ground in Redding, OTH leaders found that the twin regions of Southern Oregon and Northern California were a mess. Thirty years of, in some cases, criminal negligence from state governments had resulted in thousands of missed assessments, unsolved cases, and questionable decisions. The first big scoop was found by an analyst for the Treasury Department (Kyle Chapman) who found that all judicial efforts undertaken in the town of Paisley in Lake County had been taken over by the Millennium Forestry Company. Pulling on this string revealed the start of the problems for the OTH. Quickly, Bartlet was replaced by Agent Luciano Pareja from the Department of Homeland security. The call went wide to nearly every single federal department to get their asses to Jefferson and work out what was going wrong in their respective fields. 2042 South Market street became a circus with the Department of Agriculture surveyors sharing offices with Aviation officials while the Department of Defence investigators camp out in the staircase. It was during these initial investigations that things got interesting for those who were paying attention. The initial deluge of cases caught up all the obvious things, there had been no services conducted on the East Coast Cable Terminus in Point Arena was overdue for servicing by fifteen years, there were exactly fifteen missing persons reported in Modoc county national parks four years in a row and Douglas County sheriff Lyle Parsins has held the position for ten years despite the county records holding death certificates Parsins from 2007,2017 and 2019. These odd reports languished in the stacks upon stacks of issues reported and aside from being mildly interesting when they were discovered, there were bigger fish to fry. Kyle Chapman later revealed a conspiracy of kickbacks and corruption between the Millennium Forestry and the Lake County supervisory council worth more than 13 million dollars, earning himself a tasty promotion. At the same time, the DA of Siskyou county was gunned down by a motorcyclist in Dorris. Two things became clear to everyone working in the OTH;
There is so much to uncover in Jefferson that the real task is finding the biggest malfeasance you can and riding that investigation all the way to the top.
The bigger the malfeasance, the bigger the risk that someone might try to take it from you or that it might blow up in your face.
This allowed those strange cases that were more interesting than juicy to slip through the cracks but also caused the OTH offices to become a den of paranoia staffed by some of the most ambitious young workers for these federal departments. Its been two months since Kyle Chapman’s case hit the state court in Redding and 2042 South Market has spilled out into the parking lot with a massive gazebo. It's a hot summer and there is the promise of promotion around every corner as our PC’s arrive. The right and wrong kind of people have started to see the dots that need connecting, here's hoping someone stops finding dots. -=-=-=-=-=- Note: Sam, Bree, James, and Roni, if you have somehow ended up here, turn back now. Finally, we needed a bad guy. This was the thing I had been avoiding, in favor of working out how many and where all the military bases are in Northern Cali and Southern Oregon (creating a real suspicious google history along the way). Being an investigative and paranoia based game about cults and conspiracy, I didn’t want to just to a ‘Monster of the Week’ style game. Plus one of my players is pretty well versed in his Cthulhu mythos, so I didn’t want to do something standard. Which made me want to stay away from Deep ones and fishbits (although maybe I can work the absence of Deep ones a plot point later on?) So what do I have? I’ve got a need for a massive conspiracy, lots of pristine wilderness, a history of big American Indian tribes, Spanish Colonisation and American power. Plus a new state. I know, let’s make the new state the conspiracy. For some reason making this new state is part of some eldritch ritual about power and such. Sounds dope. Which Old God cares about human power structures and the corruption of man? Old buddy Nylarthotep. Bam, we’ve got a non-standard bad guy and a huge conspiracy that can be staring them in the face the whole time. It turns the passive hints about the chaos of creating a new state into subtle easter eggs dotting the campaign. But I also don’t want the eldritch ritual to be already done. Gotta give the players a chance to die trying to save the world. So perhaps it's just a step in the overall ritual. How many steps are there in the ritual? Well, a d20 roll tells me that there’s 16. It sounds like a good number to me. A story was coming together: It was thousands of years past the original humans encountered the being known as Emperor of Sky and Earth, Ne-ab Gendumahaah, or simply the Spirit of Man, an implicit force in the Northern United States that influenced the minds of the powerful through dreams and visions. It would be the dreams of Ne-Ab Gendumahaah that would lead Rabbit Foot to solidify the Shasta people into a great confederacy. Where his favour goes, great power forms and those powerful will become great. In reality, The Spirit of Man is an aspect of Nylarthotep, the chaos messenger of the Sultan, Azzathoth. What is happening in the North West is one spark of weakness that plays out as a flame of weakness against Azzathoth by his agent. A fleck of paint and pain on a tapestry millions of years and miles old. The original intention of the Spirit of Man was the completion of sixteen rituals across the region. As more and more of these rituals would be completed they would weaken the differences between realities, these would corrupt the minds and world to the whims of those who would be powerful, granting them longevity and even passively twisting the world to support them. But it would weaken the nature of reality for all others, bringing in great monsters and factors. If all sixteen rituals were completed the Spirit of Man would be brought forward to bequeath true power onto the successful, in reality, the knowledge of Nylarthotep would be its own downfall as the invoker would be rent asunder and the damage wrought by the pursuit would wink throughout the cosmos. The first ritual would be completed by a shaman of the Goshute People 30,000 Years ago. By the year 1700, the Shasta people had completed four rituals in total, this created the most powerful tribal confederacy of the West Coast. But the native Americans feared Ne-Ab Gendumahaah, intensely fearful of the give and take of existence, were difficult to enrapture to the power of the Spirit, but the White man was not. The Spanish would complete six rituals in the period between 1660 and 1840. The American people have completed five since the Union arrived, the last being the consecration of the Redding State Legislature. Now forces move to complete the final ritual as the Office of Temporary Handover comes into the picture. The players have to discover the connections between the rituals and attempt to stop the cabal of the rich and powerful before millions of people are killed. -=-=- This will leave the players investigating the fallout of rituals conducted long in the past, trying to put the dots together in time to stop the last few being completed. This was about all I had going into session one. Since then we’ve had four total sessions and it's been a ride. Next time I’ll talk about session one and individual session planning/running. Dave has officially declared the Monday night wars over. Obviously, both shows are still going on. But WWF is riding an incredible wave of success while WCW is free-falling in self-destruction and he doesn't see that changing anytime soon. Sunday Night Heat did a record 5.09 rating, followed the next night by Raw doing a monstrous 6.46. At one point, Raw was more than doubling Nitro's ratings during certain segments of the show. Add in all the mainstream publicity (Sable in Playboy, TV Guide doing another 4-part covers series but only WWF this time, etc.) and just weeks away from Wrestlemania which will undoubtedly be the biggest money event in WWF history and the biggest non-boxing event in the history of pay-per-view, and WWF is simply on fire right now.
On the flip side, there's WCW. For the last several weeks, Eric Bischoff has apparently been on vacation in France (Dave gets an AWESOME line here, saying it would be more appropriate if he was in Rome playing the fiddle). That left Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan in charge of Nitro this week and Dave says it was possibly the worst TV show put on by a major promotion in history and that Nash and Hogan used the show as a way to get themselves over and went to absurd lengths to basically bury everyone else in the company. When asked about it, Bischoff has basically said he's giving full control to Nash and giving him the chance to sink or swim on his own. Most people feel that Bischoff has pretty much given up and mentally checked out of the company and is looking for a way to get off the Titanic before it sinks. Dave thinks Nitro had to have been designed to fail this week because it takes a lot of thought to actually present a show that terrible, it couldn't have been an accident. He talks about how WCW has had a long tradition of bad booking, dating back to the mid-80s Crockett days where everyone did heel/face turns until the fans didn't care about anyone, screwjob finishes, and the booker pushing himself as the top star (Dusty) and obviously, nothing has changed in the last 10 years. Locker room morale is at rock bottom. Scott Hall is pretty much planning to sit out right now and has talked about suing WCW because it was a WCW employee who ran over his ankle a few weeks ago, injuring him. Benoit, Malenko, guys like them have been forgotten. Bret Hart's burial is complete and he's a midcard nobody now (he worked a 10+ minute match against Van Hammer this week, in case you're wondering). Arn Anderson, one of the top 3 promo guys in the biz, is being phased out. Billy Kidman, arguably the brightest new star in WCW in the last year or so, is barely on TV anymore. Same with Juventud Guerrera, who is the single best wrestler in the U.S. at the moment. Chris Jericho has potential to be the next Shawn Michaels or Ric Flair and he's booked like a nobody and is almost certainly WWF-bound when his contract ends. But we still have nonstop Scott Steiner, Buff Bagwell, Nash, and Hogan. Goldberg is still being booked strong because even WCW isn't foolish enough to totally bury him, but he's not going to be pushed above Hogan (who is turning face) and Dave wouldn't be surprised if they do something stupid like turn Goldberg heel (still a year away from that awful idea). With Ric Flair now being booked as the top heel (at 50 years old) and Hogan as the top babyface, it does nothing to dispel the notion that WCW is the elderly, out of touch company, while WWF is the hot, cool product. People who recently re-signed contracts are wishing they could get out of them and Dave expects nearly anyone who has a chance to go to WWF when their contracts expire will probably make the jump. But aside from all the comparisons of 1999 WCW to 1988 Crockett, Dave says there's one big difference. In 1988, even though morale was bad and the product was suffering, the performers didn't quit. They still tried to put on good shows. But now, in 1999, everyone from the wrestlers, to the announcers, to the front office...all of them have already mentally quit. Almost everyone is just collecting a check and phoning it in at this point and it's never been more obvious. And for that reason, Dave says the game is already over. WWF has won the war.
Vader became the first wrestler in history to win both New Japan's IWGP title and AJPW's Triple Crown title after defeating Akira Taue to win the title recently vacated by Toshiaki Kawada after an injury. Dave says this puts Vader up there alongside Lou Thesz as one of the only wrestlers to hold more versions of major league championships than any other wrestler ever. Vader held the CWA title in Europe in the 80s, which was a bigger deal then than it is now. The UWA title in Mexico (back when they were the top promotion there). IWGP in Japan, 3 times, and the WCW title 3 times, among others. At one point in 1990, he was the CWA, UWA, and IWGP champ all at the same time, which probably makes him the only wrestler to ever hold 3 major world titles on 3 different continents at once.
At the latest UFC PPV, Tito Ortiz got into a confrontation with Ken Shamrock, who was cageside for the fight. After Ortiz won his fight against Shamrock's protege Guy Mezger, he flipped off the Lion's Den corner and then pulled out a t-shirt that said "GAY Mezger is my bitch." Upon seeing the shirt, Shamrock jumped up and climbed the cage and started yelling at Ortiz, saying that if he put the shirt on, he would rip his head off and chastising him for poor sportsmanship. Due to UFC being afraid of any negative publicity these days, the camera pulled away from most of it, but Ortiz had to be pulled away and Shamrock nearly climbed into the cage and had to be restrained. For what it's worth, Shamrock has talked about wanting to fight again, but of course, he's still under WWF contract. He's had discussions with Vince McMahon about allowing him to fight, perhaps sometime this year but no word if it's led anywhere. And Shamrock reportedly wants to fight for the UFC title, and doesn't necessarily have any interest in fighting Ortiz, although now there's obviously some intrigue if that fight were to ever happen. But right now, UFC doesn't have enough visibility on PPV to even be able to afford to bring in Shamrock. But there's talk that UFC is making headway with the PPV providers and they seem confident that they may be able to start getting unbanned soon.
The career of Lizmark, one of Mexican wrestling's all-time legends, may have come to a sudden end due to heart problems. He'd been dealing with chest pains recently and finally checked himself into a hospital only to find out it was bad news. Doctors then told him he absolutely could never wrestle again because he would be risking his life. Dave gives a brief recap of his career, talking about him as one of the innovators of out-of-the-ring dives that have become so popular in Lucha Libre ("tope suicida!") and how his son Lizmark Jr. currently wrestles in WCW. He's 49 and had already been talking of retiring anyway but was holding out hope that he would get to wrestle his final match with his son but the WCW/CMLL deal fell through and they're in different promotions so it looks like it won't happen. In fact, Dave says Lizmark's mask is one of the most famous in Mexican wrestling history and that legacy is the reason Lizmark Jr. has repeatedly refused to lose his mask in WCW, which is why they never push him. (Turns out this wasn't the end for Lizmark. He took about 6 months off and then resumed wrestling a slightly lighter schedule but still pretty regularly for the next several years. And in even better news, he did get to wrestle with his son a bunch of times during those years. He ended up retiring in 2013 and died in 2015).
There's a quiet power struggle taking place within AJPW between Mitsuharu Misawa and Motoko Baba, the widowed wife of Giant Baba. Apparently Motoko Baba wants to oversee everything Misawa does while he wants to be left alone to run the company as he sees fit. He also wants to modernize things a bit. If you're recall, Giant Baba wasn't exactly the most in-touch guy when it came to the modern day wrestling business. (This behind-the-scenes power struggle goes on for the next year or so and eventually, Misawa leaves and takes almost the entire AJPW roster and office staff with him to form Pro Wrestling Noah which damn near puts AJPW out of business overnight. But we'll get there...)
For the first time in AJPW history, Stan Hansen won't be part of the upcoming Champion Carnival tournament. Dave explains how in sumo wrestling, when a grand champion can no longer compete at the highest level, they are usually forced into retirement in order to spare them the indignity of losing to low level fighters. AJPW is basically doing the same thing here. Stan Hansen is without a doubt the biggest foreign star in the history of Japanese wrestling but he's 50 years old now and he simply can't hang with the newer generation of stars. And since it wouldn't make sense to push him as a top star anymore, they don't want him in the tournament losing to midcard guys and looking bad. So to preserve his legendary status, they are simply not putting him in the tournament at all.
Shinya Hashimoto was expected to return to the ring for next month's big NJPW Tokyo Dome show but he won't be ready. He had major reconstructive surgery on his nose after getting it shattered to pieces in the Jan. 4 match against Naoya Ogawa and won't be medically cleared in time for the show.
Riki Choshu has announced that he plans to come out of retirement. It's got a lot of people concerned about the financial condition of NJPW because, when he retired last year, Choshu vowed he would never come back unless the company was in such bad shape that they needed him to. Soooo...now he's coming back, so obviously people are questioning things. NJPW is denying that there are any money issues and in fact, most of the wrestlers who recently re-signed were given big raises. But house show business in the last year or so has declined so who really knows. No word on who or when Choshu will wrestle again (must have been some confusion here because Choshu stayed retired for another year-plus before finally coming out of retirement in mid-2000).
Kenzo Suzuki, a former collegiate rugby star, has started training at the NJPW dojo and will likely debut for the company later this year (he doesn't last long in NJPW. Spends a couple of years in WWE during the mid-00s, and then ends up back in AJPW for most of the last decade).
Nobuhiko Takada is still not giving up the dream of being a real MMA fighter and will face UFC fighter Mark Coleman at the next PRIDE show (this ends up being one of the more notorious "fixed" fights in MMA history, with Coleman clearly taking a dive for Takada).
Speaking of Mark Coleman, WCW offered him $50,000 to come in and work a match against Goldberg and to put him over. But Coleman's people advised him against it and then Kevin Nash also shot down the idea, saying what if Vince McMahon offered Coleman $100,000 to double-cross WCW and shoot on Goldberg live on PPV and embarrass the company? Legendary retired sumo wrestler Akebono has been denying rumors that he plans to get into pro wrestling now that his sumo career is over (took him a few years, but yeah he eventually becomes a pro wrestler).
Women's boxer Shannon Hall reportedly has an offer to sign with WWF. She's also a former American Gladiator (she does sign with WWF but never makes it out of developmental).
Dave finally saw the A&E Biography episode about Andre The Giant. He says it was a very well-produced fairy tale. Definitely entertaining, but about 80% inaccurate, at least about his wrestling career. There were some good interviews with his family members and friends about his childhood and personal life but as far as his wrestling career goes, most of it was revisionist bullshit.
Legendary women's wrestler Mae Young has been playing the role of Sean Stasiak's mother on Power Pro Wrestling in Memphis. She had a wrestling match with Stacy and, at 75 years old, that makes her the oldest person to have a match that Dave is aware of (Lou Thesz had one at 74 a few years back). She took a few bumps and then faked a heart attack before sneak attacking Stacy with a purse.
A 17-year-old kid named Andre Verdun made news in Ventura, CA for his backyard wrestling group where him and a bunch of other kids were having barbed wire matches and jumping off rooftops on each other through tables and whatnot. The principal at Verdun's school was furious at the newspaper that ran the story, saying all they did was give the kids more fame and notoriety by publishing it. Verdun was apparently signing autographs at school after it happened and now there's TV shows wanting to do interviews with them (I googled the guy and it looks like he did a bunch of garbage backyard death match shit for years. There's some videos on YouTube. He also played a big part in a 20/20 piece about backyard wrestling that also interviewed Mick Foley and others. Anyway, looks like this Verdun guy is all grown up and he's a lawyer now. I can't find the local news piece, but here's the 20/20 story from later in the year which features Foley).
ECW paychecks are finally starting to clear now that they got the big influx of cash, so morale is better but no one is betting on the future. Even Tommy Dreamer, thought to be the most loyal guy in the company, went on a radio show this week saying that he only has a handshake agreement with Paul Heyman, not a contract, and said that if a serious offer came along from either WWF or WCW, he would take it.
ECW also lost their TV deals in several major cities due to financial issues. Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh TV deals were all lost. They're working on getting Boston back. They voluntarily gave up the Chicago TV deal because they were paying $3,000 a week for TV there but they've never actually run a show there so they decided it wasn't worth the cost. Same for Atlanta, although they're looking for a new TV deal there. Pittsburgh dropped them due to bounced checks.
Tammy Sytch and Chris Candido still aren't being used by ECW. They have told Heyman that they are in counseling and doing an outpatient drug rehab program. Tammy's mother also went to court this week and got a restraining order against her daughter extended (she was arrested a few weeks ago for violating it).
ECW TV this week kept taking pathetic shots at WCW. Once might have been okay but it went on and on throughout the whole show and came off as whiny and desperate. They talked about WCW ripping off ECW's gimmick with the "Uncensored" PPV. Talked about the three-way match between Raven, Hardcore Hak, and Bigelow saying they are using ECW wrestlers for an ECW-style match. And they knocked the Hogan/Flair barbed wire cage match, saying that the match will suck because both guys are 50 year old millionaires who won't take risks and besides, the barbed wire is fake anyway and in ECW they use real barbed wire. Then they showed the famous Terry Funk/Sabu barbed wire match (not bothering to mention that Funk is older than both Flair and Hogan) and basically just spent the whole show knocking WCW.
As if this week's episode of Nitro wasn't bad enough, they also failed to sell out the show in a 12,000 seat arena. It's been a long time since Nitro failed to sell out an arena that size. A few days later, a Thunder taping only drew 4,000 fans to a 15,000-seat arena, which was disastrous (they'll be happy to draw 4,000 fans to any show a year from now). During Thunder, they aired 2 promo videos hyping next week's Nitro and both clips featured Sean Waltman, who has been gone from WCW for over a year now and is, of course, currently in WWF. The wheels are falling off this company.
Also on Thunder, the crowd was chanting "steroids!" at Scott Steiner and at one point, he legit lost his cool and ran into the crowd after a fan, which they had to edited out before broadcast.
In a magazine interview with Goldberg, he was asked his thoughts on WWF and said it was "shock TV" and said he would retire from wrestling tomorrow rather than ever go to work there. Sure thing, buddy.
WWF injury/illness Report: Mankind is dealing with knee issues and will need time off soon. Billy Gunn missed a few shows due to fluid in his lungs and a respiratory infection. Steven Regal is still in rehab with no plans to return soon.
Regarding rumors that Raw will be expanding to 3 hours, apparently it was discussed several months ago back when the ratings war with Nitro was still neck-and-neck. They didn't like that Nitro had a 1 hour head start and talked about adding a third hour to Raw. But now that Raw is dominating Nitro, they don't feel the need to do it anymore, so it won't be happening. Whew. Could you imagine?
Kurt Angle will be sent to Memphis to work for Power Pro Wrestling for a bit before they put him on WWF TV.
Luna Vachon was fired this week due to several separate incidents. She has had a lot of heat with Sable, Marc Mero, Jacqueline, and agent Jack Lanza. She also complained about not getting a push because she wasn't as pretty as Sable (which she also said on TV and it was more shoot than work) and she even challenged Marc Mero to a fight backstage at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre PPV. Basically, she's just been pissing off too many people and none of the other women were comfortable having her around because she's kinda wild, so they fired her. Funny enough, she was booked to face Sable at Wrestlemania and was even booked to win the title, but that's obviously off now and Sable will likely face Tori instead.
WWF is considering doing their own women's wrestling show patterned after the old GLOW promotion of the 80s. They're holding a casting call in Los Angeles next week to bring in more pretty women for it (this never got off the ground but they ended up signing a few of the casting call women to developmental deals).
CBS wants to do a Movie of the Week type deal with Steve Austin playing the same character he played on his recent Nash Bridges episode, since that did such a huge rating. And of course, if the movie does good, it would possibly lead to a full blown spin-off TV series. Austin's guest spot on the show opened a lot of eyes in Hollywood since it did such a big rating, more than even Hogan or Piper could have ever done on network TV.
Public Enemy has a good bit of heat in WWF already, with most people feeling like they don't belong and are out of their league. They had a match against the Acolytes on Sunday Night Heat where both guys (Bradshaw especially) were stiffing the hell out of them. It was reportedly meant to be a message to PE and was approved by the office (yeah this match is BRUTAL and pretty much ended PE's run in WWF).
Sable has been making the media rounds to promote her Playboy issue. She was on Howard Stern this week and will be filming a role for La Femme Nikita next month. She was also interviewed by the New York Daily News and had this to say in regards to WWF's product: "As a responsible parent, I choose not to let my child watch it (Raw). My child is very young. She has a bed time and she's in bed when our show comes on. To me, that's being a responsible parent. Ultimately, it's the parent's decision. If you do not wish your child to watch the WWF, change the channel. It's not our place to put on a show that's supposedly for your children. It's your place as a parent to monitor what your children watch. Are they saying it's not okay to see the characters we play beat up each other but it's okay to have your child watch a movie where a famous actor blows away 100 people with an M-16?" When asked if she felt her character is degrading to women, Sable responded, "I feel I'm being a strong, stand-up woman. People don't have to like what I do or agree with what I do because they don't have to live my life. I would much rather my daughter when she grows up, do what she wants to do because she wants to do it, not because of what someone else thinks." When asked about turning heel recently but still not getting booed, Sable pointed to her chest and said, "Why would they boo this?"
The idea with Jim Ross acting like a heel lately is because they want to transition him into being Steve Williams' manager and also because they're trying to transition Michael Cole into the new main announcer for Raw. However, Ross' promos had the opposite effect and got over huge and he got big cheers. So they've dropped the heel act but the plan is still for him to do the talking for Steve Williams and there's no plans for him to replace Michael Cole anytime soon.
Remember that hotel and casino that WWF bought in Las Vegas? Well, the plan is to tear it down and rebuild since the building isn't right for what they want (they want to be able to hold shows in it, but the structure isn't built for it). Anyway, whenever they do finally demolish it, there's been talk of turning it into a wrestling angle and having Austin press the button, with the storyline idea being that Austin just destroyed a multi-million dollar piece of property that Vince owns (didn't happen but that would have been awesome).
Someone writes in and chastises Dave for being so mean to WCW. The guy basically says, yeah WCW sucks right now but do you have to keep ridiculing them for it? Someone else writes in and shits all over Mick Foley, saying he's a glorified stuntman and doesn't belong in a wrestling ring and he hates this new era of jumping off cages and crashing through tables and all that stuff. He wishes someone with a lot of money would come along and promote wrestling the way it used to be in the good ol' days. He signs his name "Duane Mason" but I know a Jim Cornette letter when I see one!

Visitor's Guide to Red Wings hockey at Joe Louis Arena
It’s the last season for Joe Louis Arena. Many pilgrims are making the trek to the Hockeytown holy ground to watch the Detroit Red Wings play. I’ve posted this guide over the years for first time visitors to the Joe. I hope you find it helpful. Suggestions welcome!
I've been asked about safety in and around the Joe as well as nearby Detroit city streets. Detroit has a reputation of having high crime and some will say it was earned. However in the 20 years I've been going to games at the Joe and spending time around the Joe I've never felt threatened for my safety. Immediately around the Joe there are Detroit City Police officers and Olympia Security before and after the game. Inside the Joe there is Olympia Security. The city streets around the Joe and out to the restaurants and hotels are walkable and you should feel safe. But like in any modern city, keep your eyes and ears open and don't be stupid. Walk in groups. Stay (reasonably) sober. Don't go down the sketchy alley. Stay on the well-lit streets. Park in a guarded structure not on a dark side street far away. Lock your car doors. Don't leave visible items inside the car. In other words, be smart. Don't be a victim. You'll be fine and you'll have a good time.
A guided tour of Joe Louis Arena is available by scheduling in advance. It only costs US$6 for adults and US$3 for children. Tours are only available on certain dates. Check the Red Wings website for more information and scheduling.
Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster, or at the Joe box office (if not already sold out), or through a reseller like Stubhub or even Ticketmaster's Ticket Exchange. Join the mailing list and check out the Red Wings social media for short notice deals like student and military rush ticket pricing and Fan Packs. Be advised the special offers are typically for low demand games like weekdays. Friday and Saturday games especially near holidays are high demand and typically not going to have special offers. These games will most likely not have cheap seats even on the reseller market.
The new Little Caesars Arena is still being built. You can see the progress at 66 Sibley St, Detroit, MI 48201 just west of Woodward Ave. north of I-75.
Locals don’t know much about hotels in Detroit but I’ve known visitors with money to stay at the Westin Book Cadillac which is walking distance to the Joe. On the mid range side check out the Ilitch-owned Motor City Casino which also has free shuttle to the Joe. On the cheaper side still within walking distance is the Holiday Inn Express next to the Westin Book Cadillac.
I recommend eating at a restaurant somewhere else besides the Joe before the game - unless you like stadium food at stadium prices. If you must eat at the Joe check out the free playbill for vendor map. If you want a complete Ilitch experience then get a slice or whole pie of Little Caesars pizza. On the lighter, fresher side is East End Joe’s deli with good subs and salads. There aren't many restaurants immediately near the Joe. I recommend somewhere iconic such as a coney from American or Lafayette (PROTIP: Lafayette) both of which are a reasonable walking distance to the Joe. Tommy’s and Cobo Joe’s are neighborhood bars that are walking distance to the Joe if you want to drink and hangout with fans before or after. Again /detroit sidebar has more bar suggestions in and around the city.
For convenience, park at the Joe Louis Arena parking structure. It may be pricier (US$25 as of 2016-10-23) and take a while to get out if you're in a rush but it is a comfortable sheltered walk down the habitrail to the Joe. If you are up for a short walk and would like to save a buck I recommend the Cobo basement for US$15. The further away you park from the Joe the cheaper it is. Many locals will park at the Greektown Casino and take the People Mover elevated tram for US$0.75 to the Joe Louis Arena stop but the line gets long after the game. Some nearby bars also have shuttles for free or a couple bucks. PROTIP: Nemo's has the best shuttle drivers and they let you bring roadies. Regardless, remember where you parked, how you walked to the Joe, and which door you came in. I’ve seen many visitors get turned around after a couple beers and a good game.
Coming from Canada? There is a Windsor tunnel bus US/CAN$4.50 each way from the bus terminal downtown Windsor (Chatham and Church) to the front of Cobo. From there it is a 10 minute walk, mostly indoors. Getting through immigration takes a few minutes. Have your passport and don't be drunk. Check the schedule and give yourself at least an hour. The last bus is half an hour after the game ends. (thanks poodletown!)
The Joe doors open 1.5 hours before game start but people sometimes start casually queuing before then. If there is a giveaway that game, people will queue earlier before doors open. If you want that bobblehead, get there before the doors open.
If it is cold or inclement weather and the doors aren't open yet you can shelter in the Box Office below the Gordie Howe entrance or on the river side inside the closest Cobo doors to the Joe. PROTOP: In the Box Office you can pick up the #JLAwifi WIFI against the wall closest to the rink.
The best photos of the Joe exterior are from street level at the corner of Jefferson and Yzerman, the Riverwalk along the Detroit River, and from the People Mover on the way to the Cobo stop. There is a Farewell to the Joe mural of sorts on the outside face of the iconic steps at both entrances. Get there early for a good photo op.
Will call tickets are at the Box Office on street level at the Gordie Howe entrance of the Joe. PROTIP: Across from the will call door is the player parking entrance. If you get there early enough (2-3ish hours?) you can see the Red Wings drive up. Opposing team’s bus unloads near the river side entrance.
There is a strict bag size policy enforced at the door. I’ve seen some upset people turned away at the doors. Know before you go.
You will have to go through a metal detector and may be subject to extra screening to enter the Joe.
Cell service inside the concrete bunker of the Joe sucks. However the Joe has free WIFI. Point your device at SSID #JLAwifi - no password but there is a click through screen.
There are free playbills inside the Joe at the entrances. Grab one because it has an arena map with section numbers and vendor locations. Sometimes there are interesting articles too.
There is no single large pro-shop at the Joe. However there are a couple vendors scattered around the concourse selling shirts and memorbilia. There are also some vendors setting replica jerseys and signed authentic jerseys and gear. PROTIP: the Joe prices are high for swag. Buy your gear ahead of time online or at Detroit Athletic in Detroit or Hockeytown Authentics up in Troy.
There are local Detroit and Michigan craft beer vendors on the Joe concourse, check the map in the free playbill. They're priced around US$10. I'd rather overpay for good local beer than overpay for shit beer. PROTIP: Founders has had some yummy seasonal beer this year on tap at the Joe.
The Olympia Club in the Joe is meh unless you're attending a specific event there. Unless you have a free pass I wouldn't bother going.
Friendly ushers are everywhere to help out and answer your questions. Most will take your photo for you if you ask politely.
During warmups, fans congregate around the glass. Players come out at 30 minutes before game time for warmups. PROTIP: I recommend watching the Red Wings shoot at the net during warmups from behind the net on the glass in section 101. Hearing the puck smack the glass inches from your face is neat. Same for aisle for 115 on the visiting team side behind the net.
The best spot for photos of the banners hanging from the rafters is the top row of the upper level in section 215. The Howe, Lindsey, and Delvecchio statues are on the concourse just inside the Gordie Howe entrance.
There are no bad seats at the Joe, just some people have preferences. OK, section 204b row 27 seat 10 sucks. Sit in your own seat. If you see seats that are still empty well into the first period then move to them. If someone asks you to move out of their seat just do it. PROTIP: if you want to hear some commentary sit in the last row (24) of sections 209-210 right below the media booths. Ken and Mickey are above 207.
Don't be disrespectful during the national anthem(s). Just stand politely and shut up. Some visitors don't understand how disrespectful they can be. It's like 2 minutes, put the phone down.
Most Red Wings fans are friendly people and quite knowledgeable about their team and the sport. Strike up a conversation and you'll probably learn something new.
Cheer for your visiting team but don't be a dick about it.
DO NOT STAND UP OUT OF YOUR SEAT WHILE THE PUCK IS IN PLAY.
There are usually no lines for the new restrooms built above the concourse vendors on both sides. The original men's restrooms can get long lines because no one knows there are new restrooms. PROTIP: check out the original men's restrooms for classic old hockey barn urinal trough nostalgia.
Don't leave early! If the Red Wings win the DJ will play Don't Stop Believing in the final seconds or right after the game ends for you and thousands of your friends to sing along. The arena DJ plays music from multiple genres from motown to country to pop and is known to take suggestions. He can be reached on Twitter @thehockeyjockey.
Unless you like the crush of humanity, wait a couple minutes until after the game to head out. The concourse can get pretty tight during well-attended weekend or playoff games. PROTIP: walk around the inside of the Joe to section 102 to avoid the concourse crush.
